July 28th 10:00am and all packed up in our pioneer clothing and ready to head to Webster's Flat. The drive up was quiet. We had 2 Laurels and the bishop. Unloaded the hand carts loaded them up ...
Ron gave a little trek history and prepared us for the 7mile hike up to the camp site. Aprayer and we were off.
Our family was Austin Corry, Riken Harris, Chartise Dansy, Katie Rhoton, and Jenna Miller. Oh and our 5lb (wheat baby) Pasley mae. Pa being Ron Ma me and oh Bishop Allred was Grandpa. Each family had three senerios to go thru no the trek. so that the kids could get a feel for some of the trials the real pioneers went thru. Some families had broken bones, snake bites even 1 family's baby died and we needed to bury him along the way. Our senerios included. I burt my hand in the fire making breakfast, Ron got heat exhaustion, and Austin got caught in quicksand had to be rescued and ride in the cart till reasted up. It was not taken completly seriously by many of the kids. except the Giles family.
This was the pony express rider who came with the letter calling all the men 12 and up to form the mormon battalion. A side not this is also the horse that ran me over on the trail. No I'm not kidding. He got spooked on the trail and I was in his way he tried to avoid me so got knocked down and hit my head off a rock. I'm thankful for the opening prayer keeping me from getting hurt. was a bit sore but no cuts and just a stiff neck. And the kids took this acident seriosly so that was good to. The hike was good and rather hot so it was tough and gave the kids a taste of what what the pioneers went thru. Then we had some readings about waking up one morning on the trail to find 13 dead and we each read about one of the dead and walked to the back of the room. then that day 2 more followed and all were burried in one large tomb then it was brought to our attention the reality of the empty space left by the death of these friends and family. Then each of us read about a real pioneer that had crossed the plains on their way to Salt Lake. The neatest part about that was how the youth took their person into their hearts and felt them and their experience.
We did get rain durring the program but were blessed with theis beautiful double rainbow. After the program we sat around the fire awhile and all settled down at 10:30
